Chapter Eighteen

Alex stood up, thinking it best to try and calm Matt down, when Matt snapped round to face him dead on.

Alex took a step back. Not because he was scared of Matt, imposing though he was, but because not a damned thing in that moment felt in any way right. None of it. Was someone outside of the room observing? There were hidden cameras, he was sure, but it felt more intense than that, not so much that they were being watched, but that someone had stepped into the room with them unannounced. And there was that temperature change again, cold then stuffy.

‘I heard about Bonny,’ Matt said.

The statement took Alex by the collar and choked him, because Matt couldn’t have heard about Bonny, because he’d bought her as a puppy, watched her grow, and watch her die, and all in the years after they’d lost touch. News about the loss of someone in the Regiment spread pretty quickly, but news about the death of a pet? Not so much.

‘Yeah,’ Alex said, not sure what else to say, and absolutely sure he didn’t want to talk about his dead dog. Didn’t exactly seem all that appropriate. And in the time it had taken Alex to register what Matt had said, Matt had stepped closer towards him.

‘Who’s Bonny?’ Rachel asked, but her words seemed distant and Alex didn’t answer.

‘And how about that crook, huh?’ Matt said. ‘Told you it would come in useful, didn’t I? How did it feel, you know, skewering that fucker?’

Alex stared up into the face of his old friend working hard to give nothing away. Perhaps Matt did know about Bonny, he thought? He clearly knew about what had happened on that patrol, proving that confidential meant shit in the army.

‘Listen, Matt,’ Alex said, holding a hand up, hoping to calm Matt down enough to work out just what the hell had snapped in his brain to make him go off on such a tangent. ‘I don’t know what you’ve heard, but Corporal Coates and I, we’ve been sent to talk to you about what happened in those caves …’

Matt didn’t answer. Instead, he said: ‘Northcutt wants a word.’

The statement stunned Alex into silence. All he could do was stare up at the big man in front of him.

‘He’s here,’ Matt said, his eyes growing wide as he stepped closer still, forcing Alex back, his legs knocking into a chair. Matt tapped his chest, then his head. ‘He’s in here!’ he said. ‘With me! They all are. We all are. And we’ve been waiting for you.’

Rachel stepped past Matt and stood between him and Alex. ‘I think we should leave,’ she said, then looked up at Matt and said, ‘and I think you need to get back to your bed. I’ll call a doctor.’

Rachel put her hand out towards Alex, signalling for him to give her the fob that Major Tucker had handed to them, when Matt back-handed her so hard she did a full three-sixty before landing on the small table, crushing it beneath her.
